How do I choose my VAE equipment?

With the development of electrically-assisted bicycles (EABs)range ofequipment for the well-being and protection of cyclists.

While some products differ little from classic muscle bike models in technical terms, others meet new standards established to enhance the safety of cyclists, and in particular bike owners. pedelecs (or speedbikes)that is, EABs capable of speeds of up to 45 km/h.

How can you be sure you're choosing the right product? Probikeshop can help.

VAE Helmets

Whether in town, on trails or country roads, the V.A.E can enable users to reach higher speeds than with a muscle-powered bike.

Effective head protection is therefore essential. While users of "classic" V.A.E. bikes can use a bicycle helmet "helmet with CE (EN-1078) certification, speedbike users are advised to use a helmet that meets the requirements of the NTA-8776 standard.
This standard guarantees enhanced protection, with greater resistance to impact at high speeds (speeds 21% faster than the European CE standard) and wider skull coverage (around 10% more) - particularly in the temporal and occipital lobes (the back of the skull and the temples).

As a result, an NTA-8776 helmet dissipates 43% more impact energy, while maintaining a light, airy, bicycle helmet appearance. In addition to these features, these helmets often feature an integrated screen, for maximum optical comfort and improved vision at high speeds...

VAE Protectors

When it comes to body protection, there is no specific standard for electric-assist bicycles.

The glovesAlthough not compulsory for EAB users, gloves and helmets are highly recommended. Speedbike riders should opt for models with reinforced palms - with a layer of shock-absorbing foam or gel combined with an anti-abrasion coating - and reinforced hands, usually in TPR rubber, for real protection in the event of impact.

For electrically-assisted mountain bikers (EABB), some manufacturers now offer special models of elbow pads, knee pads and shin guards. Here again, the idea is to offer calibrated protection, in line with higher speeds than the rider would have reached without motorization. However, there's no specific standard here; protection for Speedbikes generally benefits from just level 2 approval (highest level of protection)This is compulsory, for example, in downhill racing. Sometimes, the only difference is in aesthetic terms, with an electric blue element.

VAE Textile

Electrically-assisted bicycles, particularly urban models and VTTAEs, make it possible to reach higher speeds with less effort and therefore less sweat.

Surfing on the strong growth in EAB sales, some textile brands have developed clothing specifically for this type of activity. These products generally feature a windproof, slightly warmer front section, an airy rear section and zipped openings for tailor-made ventilationHowever, many "classic" models incorporate these features and are perfectly suitable without being labelled "e-bike".

EAB backpacks

Finally, for cyclists and riders who enjoy very long outings or multi-day tours, a second battery will often be indispensable.

But carrying a battery on your back requires special equipmentbecause of the weight, shape and fragility of a VAE battery.

All brands of backpacks have now integrated one or more models dedicated to VAEs into their ranges. These bags are generally characterized by a dedicated compartmentpadded to protect both the battery and the rider in the event of a fall, and equipped with Velcro fasteners to keep it perfectly in place.
