The bike chain it is the central element of the drivetrain and a fortiori of your road bike. It is the element that drives the gears (chainrings, cassette, pulleys) and propels the bike forward. It is the link between the crankset and the cassette. The energy exerted by the cyclist drives the crankset, which via the chain turns the cassette and therefore the rear wheel. The bicycle chain depends on the drivetrain and in particular on the cassette. On road bikes, you will generally find cassettes with 8, 9 or 10 sprockets and now even cassettes with 11 speeds. The spacing between each sprocket on the cassette is therefore different: the more sprockets a cassette has, the smaller the gap between them, and the narrower the chain will need to be!
