Wheel skewer – The importance of a secure wheel attachment

The wheel skewer takes the form of a 9 mm diameter axle with a nut at one end and a lever at the other. Inserted into the hub of your front/rear wheel, the wheel skewer clamps it securely to the fork/rear dropout of your frame. The wheel skewer is therefore a critical component, and the slightest fault with this part creates a major risk of a crash, which is very often unavoidable when it occurs on the front axle of your bike! If your wheel skewer shows signs of weakness, or if you need to retighten it before every ride, opt for the safety of a new model!

Made from titanium, but more commonly from steel, the axle of a wheel skewer respects, in terms of length, dimensions specific to road cycling. Where an MTB wheel skewer features a front length of 110 mm and 135, 142 or even 150 mm at the rear, the dimensions are reduced on the road, with standards of 100 mm (front axle) and 130 mm (rear axle).
