Velo brake lever - First a braking element

THE brake levers on a road bike are, obviously, first of all a braking element. Fixed in the extension of the hanger, they have the particularity, compared to the mountain bike levers, to offer additional support for the hands. By pulling on the lever, you shoot the cable which, housed in its sheath, will activate the caliper. When the brake caliper tightens, the pads attached to the ends of the "jaws" will come rub the rim and therefore brake the road bike. The quality of braking therefore depends, of course, on the precision and fluidity of the lever, but also on the quality of cables & sheaths, of the stirrups and skates. Also remember to choose your pads according to your type of rim (carbon or aluminum) to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Velo brake lever - today, also an element of transmission

Bike brake levers evolved in the early 90s by integrating the gear shift into "casseroles". First located on the frame, the manufacturers took advantage of the ideal position of the levers and their shape to integrate the speed change system. Thus, the runner has at his fingertips both his brake and his speed change. Like them Automatic pedals, this evolution is one of the biggest innovations of the last 30 years with regard to bike.
