How do I adjust my automatic road bike pedals?

To avoid joint pain, it's important to properly adjust your cleats and automatic pedals. Here's a guide to basic adjustment, which doesn't take any pathology into account.

  • Time : 20 min
  • Level : Medium
  • Tools : Allen key set

Steps

Reminder: for the right-hand pedal ("R"), the screwing direction is conventional, i.e. clockwise, whereas for the left-hand pedal ("L"), it is counter-clockwise.

The use of automatic pedals requires specific shoes on which cleats must be installed to act as an interface between the shoe and the pedal. Here's how to set the cleats in the shoe:

  1. For longitudinal adjustment (front/back), place your cleat so that it is centered on the axis formed by the fold between your foot and toes.
Probikeshop tip: most shims have a mark to help you make this adjustment.

  2. For lateral adjustment (left/right), place the shim so that it is centered in relation to your foot.

  3. Grease, screw in and tighten the screws to the indicated torque.
Probikeshop tip: generally not exceed 5 Nm, otherwise it will be difficult to dismantle them in the future.

Your shims are now mounted, but after a first ride, it may be useful to check their tightness.

This is a basic setting which does not take into account any pathological problems, so it's important to test it on short outings to validate it or adjust it according to how you feel.

In relation to this setting :

  • If you move the cleats back, you'll feel less stress on your calves and you'll be more comfortable over time: this setting may be useful for beginners or touring cyclists.
  • If you move the cleats forward, it will be easier to push, but your calves will feel more strain: this setting may be useful for competition-oriented riding.

If you experience joint pain as a result of the automatic pedals, it's best to consult a sports doctor or have a postural study carried out to identify whether a particular adjustment is necessary.
