How to fit an MTB stem?
Has your new MTB stem just been delivered? Are you eager to see the difference when you are on your mountain bike? Here is how to fit this part to your bike without making any mistakes.

Steps
- Place the stem onto the steerer tube (Cylindrical element of the fork that connects to the frame and onto which the stem is fitted) of your fork, then begin tightening the retaining bolts so it no longer moves. Probikeshop tip: the height at the point of attachment to the steerer tube can vary, so check that the stem always protrudes by approximately 3 mm above the steerer tube.
- Place the stem cap with its bolt without tightening it for now.
- Then fit the handlebar onto the stem, and evenly tighten the faceplate bolts to the torque specified by the manufacturer. Probikeshop tip: if the MTB handlebar or stem are made of carbon, it is recommended to use anti-seize grease at the contact point between these two parts to reduce the required tightening torque and thus avoid damaging them.
- Align the cockpit with the front wheel, tighten the star nut without forcing it, then tighten the stem fixing bolts to the tightening torque always specified by the manufacturer.
Your stem is now fitted. It is recommended to go for a short initial ride to check the tightening and position.
