How to fit a mountain bike stem?

Your new MTB stem just been delivered? Can't wait to see the changes once you're on the road? MOUNTAIN BIKE ? Here's how to fit this part to your bike without making a mistake.

  • Time : 30 min
  • Level : Easy
  • Tools : Allen key set | Torque wrench

Steps

  1. Place the stem on the pivot (the cylindrical part of the fork that connects it to the frame and to which the stem is attached) on your fork, then start tightening the retaining bolts to stop it moving. Probikeshop tip The height at which the stem is attached to the steerer tube can change, so check that the stem always protrudes about 3 mm above the steerer tube.
  2. Loosely fit the stem cap with its screw.
  3. Mount the handlebars on the stem, then tighten the cap screws evenly to the torque specified by the manufacturer. Probikeshop tip tip: if the mountain bike handlebars handlebars or stem are made of carbon, we recommend using anti-seize grease on the contact between these two parts to reduce the torque required and thus avoid damaging them.
  4. Align the cockpit with the front wheel, screw thesteering star without forcing, then tighten the stem mounting bolts to the torque always specified by the manufacturer.

Your stem is now assembled. It's a good idea to take it out for a spin to check tightening and position.
