How to fit a road bike headset?
The headset is a wear part containing the steering bearings. Few manufacturers sell the bearings separately; when play develops, it is time to replace the complete headset. In the case of an external or semi-integrated headset, the cups are pressed into the frame by force. Here is how to fit them.

Steps
- Slide on the fork crown race
Probikeshop Tip: the tapered part should face upwards, it comes into contact with the bearing.
- Fit the fork star nut onto the fork by tapping moderately on the star nut driver previously positioned A.
Probikeshop Tip: to make fitting easier, you can apply a little grease.
- Grease the headtube openings B then press the bare headset cups into place.
- Press the cups c into the frame using the cup press until they are fully seated against the frame.
Probikeshop Tip: during this delicate operation, make sure the cups are entering the frame perfectly straight at all times.
- Grease the bearing housings D before fitting them. Probikeshop Tip: pay attention to the fitting direction.
- Slide the fork into the frame then fit the washer/top cap assembly as indicated in your headset manual E.
- Then refit your cockpit
Now that the headset is fitted, you will need to adjust it.
