How do I adjust my road bike brakes?

Brake assembly is fairly straightforward, but adjusting your brakes so that the pads don't touch the rim is a little more complex. Here's how.

Steps

If you have a disc system, please consult How to adjust your ATV disc brakes as the operations are quite similar.

After checking that the caliper is visually centered on the frame,

  1. Adjust the position of the pads so that they are centered on the braking surface of the wheel. rim but slightly pinched towards the front.
  2. Now center the brake pads on either side of the rim. rim using the centering screw on the caliper.
  3. Adjust the cable tension so that there is about 2 mm clearance between the brake pads and the rim.
    Probikeshop tip: make sure the caliper opening lever is closed during this step.
  4. Tighten the caliper bolts to the torque specified by the manufacturer, using a torque wrench.

The brake is now adjusted. It's advisable to check the adjustment and tightening after a few brake applications.
