❓1. What are the different types of headsets and which one should you choose?

  • A-headset / Aheadset (threadless): the modern standard, simple, robust, ideal for the majority of MTBs.
  • Integrated (IS): bearings seated directly in the frame, aesthetically clean and lightweight.
  • Semi-integrated (ZS): cups pressed into the frame, good rigidity / weight compromise.
  • External (EC): visible cups, more robust but slightly heavier.

👉 The choice depends primarily on the standard of your frame: you cannot choose freely, you must follow what the manufacturer specifies.

❓2. How do I check compatibility with my frame and fork?

  • Frame standard: IS / ZS / EC (or combinations: e.g. ZS44/ZS56).
  • Fork steerer diameter: straight (e.g. 1"1/8) or tapered (1"1/8 → 1"1/2).
  • Headset dimensions: indicated by two numbers (e.g. ZS44/56), corresponding to the internal diameter of the upper/lower frame seats.
  • Headset stack height: influences the cockpit position.

👉 The most important: exactly match the measurements of your frame + steerer.

❓3. What quality level and which bearings should you choose?

  • Steel bearings: robust, economical, good lifespan if well maintained.
  • Stainless steel bearings: more resistant to corrosion, excellent for intensive or wet use.
  • Sealed bearings: recommended for MTB to limit maintenance.
  • High-end sets (e.g. machined, premium steel): better smoothness, longer lifespan, reduced weight.

👉 If you often ride in mud or rain, opt for stainless steel or heavily sealed.
