How to maintain your MTB rear derailleur?

In order to improve the lifespan of your derailleur and ensure the smoothest possible operation, it is important to lubricate your drivetrain regularly and also to maintain your MTB rear derailleur. Here is how to carry out a thorough clean.

  • Time: 1h00
  • Level: Intermediate
  • Tools: Allen key set | Degreaser | Cleaner | Grease | Cloth

Steps

For an effective clean, it is necessary to remove the derailleur from the bike.

  1. Remove the derailleur from the frame by unscrewing it from the derailleur hanger.

  2. Before disassembling it, roughly clean the outside of the derailleur.

  3. Separate the two parts, remove the jockey wheels taking care to note the correct orientation for reassembly.

  4. Clean the jockey wheels, the cage and the derailleur.
Probikeshop tip: take the opportunity to check the condition of the jockey wheels and replace them if necessary.

  5. Reassemble everything with grease.

Your derailleur is now perfectly clean. All that remains is to refit it onto your MTB, lubricate your drivetrain and then check that your entire MTB drivetrain is working correctly. You may need to fine-tune the adjustment of your derailleur.
