How to fit an MTB headset?

The MTB headset is a wear part that must be regularly maintained and even replaced to ensure good handling. Get your tools ready… fit it!

Tools: Grease | Fork crown race setter (for non-split ring models) | Cup press | Hammer

Slide the fork crown race around the steerer by hand until it becomes tight. For split ring models, it will position itself automatically, without needing step 2 (therefore, without needing to use the crown race setter).
Probikeshop tip: the tapered part must face upwards, as it comes into contact with the bearing.
Finish pressing it onto the fork steerer by striking moderately but sharply on the crown race setter.
Probikeshop tip: to make fitting easier, you can apply a little grease.
Grease the headtube openings then place the bare headset cups inside.
Press the cups into the frame using the cup press until they are firmly in contact with the frame.
Probikeshop tip: throughout this delicate operation, make sure the cups are going in straight.
Grease the bearing seats before fitting them. Probikeshop tip: pay attention to the fitting orientation.
Slide the fork into the frame and position the washer/top cap assembly as indicated in your headset manual. Then refit your cockpit.
