How to choose your MTB top cap, star nut and spacers?
Since these parts are essential for ensuring the proper functioning of your MTB cockpit, and in particular your steering, here is some information to help clear up any doubts on the subject.

- The steerer tube diameter of the MTB fork
- The type: classic star nut or expander
The types of top caps, star nuts/expanders, and spacers
The top cap A is the component placed above your MTB stem B to complete the assembly and also ensure the adjustment of the headset bearing play.
The star nut C is a threaded insert that is pressed into the fork steerer tube to allow the stem cap bolt to be screwed in. There is another system called an expander D. This one is not pressed into the steerer, but expands when tightened and locks itself inside the steerer.
The headset spacers E are the washers placed under the stem to optionally raise the cockpit height.
Whether it is the top cap, the star nut or the spacers, they come in three different sizes depending on the fork steerer size F; i.e. 1", 1"1/8 or 1.5".
Which top cap, star nut and spacer should you choose?
Aside from the size dictated by your fork steerer, you can fit whatever you like. It is not uncommon to fit a custom top cap and/or spacers to personalise your bike.
If you are unsure between a classic star nut or an expander, bear in mind that the former is not recommended for a carbon fork steerer, for which a less aggressive expander is advised.
