Although it may seem simple, choosing the right MTB saddle clamp is not to be taken lightly. Here's how to make the right choice.
Standards
- Mounting diameter
- Clamping types: screw or quick-acting
Types of saddle clamps
The saddle clamp diameter corresponds to the outside diameter of the bike's seat tube. It should not be confused with the seatpost diameter (inner diameter).
There are two types of clamp: quick-release or screw-type. The quick-release system allows you to change your saddle height or remove the seatpost quickly and without tools, while the screw clamp system allows you to change your saddle height or remove the seatpost quickly and without tools. screw fastening ensures more precise and reliable tightening.
Which saddle clamp to choose?
To choose the right diameter, refer to the manufacturer's data for your mountain bike frame, or alternatively, measure the outside diameter directly on the frame's seat tube with a caliper.
As for the clamping system, if your frame and your seatpost are made of aluminum, you can use a quick-release. If, on the other hand, one of the components is made of carbon, it's best to use a screw-type clamp, so as to be able to respect the tightening torques and avoid damaging anything.
