How to choose your road bike seat collar?

Certainly the simplest component on a bike, yet it is not uncommon to make a mistake when choosing one. Here is how to avoid getting it wrong.

Types of seat collar

The diameter of the seat collar corresponds to the outer diameter of the bike's seat tube. It must not be confused with the diameter of the seatpost (inner diameter).

Regarding the collar fastening, there are two types: quick-release or bolt. The quick-release system allows you to adjust your saddle height or remove the seatpost quickly and without tools, whereas the bolt fastening system provides a more precise and reliable clamp.

How to choose your seat collar?

For the choice, it is fairly straightforward — refer to your frame manufacturer's data to find the diameter, or if no information is available, measure the outer diameter directly on the seat tube of your frame using a calliper.

For the clamping system, if your frame and seatpost are aluminium you can use a quick-release, but if either component is carbon, it is recommended to use a bolt clamp so that you can respect the torque settings and avoid any damage.
