How to fit a mountain bike chain?

A relatively simple operation, here's a video to help you replace your chain. mountain bike chain chain yourself.

  • Time : 30 min
  • Level : Easy
  • Tools : Chain rivet | Quick-release pliers (if chain has one)

Steps

  1. Put the chain on the smallest sprocket, then disengage it from the crankset so that it's loose.

  2. Open the chain using the chain adjuster or quick-release clamp, depending on the chain you have. Then remove it from the bike.

  3. Use the old chain as a template to cut the new chain to the correct length. In the case of a new assembly, run the chain over the largest chainring without passing through the derailleur, close the loop as short as possible and add 2 links (1 internal + 1 external). For full-suspension mountain bikes, perform this operation in the arm position that requires the longest chain.

  4. Replace the chain on your ATV drivetrain transmission, following the path of the derailleurs and so that the engraved part of the chain is on the outside.

  5. In the case of a chain SRAM chain, fit the quick-release. For a SHIMANO chain, rivet the chain using the pin supplied, then break off the protruding part using pliers.
Probikeshop tip: If riveting has created a hard spot, "massage" the chain to remove it.
