How to fit a road bike cassette?

A fairly simple operation, cassette assembly is within everyone's reach if you have the right tools.

  • Tools : Chain whip | Cassette remover (Shimano/Sram or Campagnolo depending on your cassette) | Torque wrench

Steps

First, disassemble the rear wheel, then remove the quick-release.

  1. Hold the cassette with the chain whip to prevent it from rotating 

  2. Loosen the central nut using the cassette remover.

  3. Remove the cassette from the freewheel body.

  4. Clean and grease the freewheel body.
    Probikeshop tip: Check the condition of the freewheel body.

  5. Fit the new cassette.
    Probikeshop tip: Note that the splines on the body act as a locator to position the sprockets correctly.

  6. Finally, tighten the new central nut to the torque specified by the manufacturer.

After a few rides, check the tightness of the cassette, as it may have just settled into place.
