How to fit a road bike stem?

Your new stem just been delivered? Can't wait to see the changes when you're on your bike? Here's how to fit this part without making a mistake.

  • Time: 30 min
  • Level : Easy
  • Tools : Allen key set | Torque wrench

Steps

  1. Place the stem on the pivot of your fork then start tightening the retaining bolts, just to stop it moving.
Probikeshop tip: Depending on the stem, the height of the pivot attachment may change, so check that the stem always protrudes about 3 mm above the pivot.

  2. Place the plug with its screw without tightening for the moment.

  3. Then mount the handlebars on the stem, and tighten the cap screws evenly to the torque specified by the manufacturer.
Probikeshop tip: if the handlebars or stem are made of carbon, we recommend using assembly paste in contact between these two parts to reduce the torque required and thus avoid damaging them.

  4. Align the cockpit with the wheel, adjust the play in the direction then tighten the screws to the torque specified by the manufacturer.

Once assembled, it's a good idea to go for a short ride to check that the bolts have not shifted and that the position on the bike is correct.
