How to fit road bike bar tape?

Bar tape ensures the comfort of your cockpit and allows you to add a personal touch to your bike. Here is how to fit it.

  • Time: 30 min
  • Level: Easy
  • Tools: Cleaner | Cloth | A pair of scissors | Adhesive tape

Steps

  1. Clean the part of the handlebar on which the tapes will be placed.

  2. Secure the cable outers using the adhesive tape A.

  3. Fold back the lever hood on itself.

  4. Place a strip of approximately 10 cm behind the lever to cover the clamping collar B.
Probikeshop tip: this strip is sometimes supplied with your bar tape.

  5. Begin wrapping the tape around the handlebar starting from the bottom while leaving approximately 1 cm of tape overhanging the end of the bar C.
Probikeshop tip: some bar tapes have a self-adhesive strip to make fitting easier.

  6. Then continue wrapping the tape around the handlebar, stretching it slightly and overlapping it by approximately 1/3 to cover the handlebar properly.

  7. When you are approximately 5 cm from the stem, cut the tape at an angle for a better finish, then secure it with the adhesive strip supplied with the bar tape D.

  8. Place the handlebar end plug by tucking the overhanging tape into the bar E.

  9. Refit the lever hood.

  10. Repeat the operation for the other tape.
