How to fit an MTB handlebar?

Fairly straightforward to do on your MTB, here are the steps to follow.

  • Time: 15 min
  • Level: Easy
  • Tools: Allen key set | Torque wrench | Anti-seize grease (for carbon models)

Steps

  1. Remove the bolts from the MTB stem faceplate.
  2. Place the MTB handlebar in the stem.
Probikeshop tip: if the handlebar or stem is made of carbon, it is recommended to use anti-seize grease at the contact point between these two parts to reduce the required tightening torque and thus avoid damaging them.
  3. Begin tightening the stem bolts evenly.
Probikeshop tip: make sure the stem faceplate remains parallel to the stem as you tighten.
  4. Tighten the stem bolts in a cross pattern.
Probikeshop tip: make sure to respect the tightening torque specified by the manufacturer, especially for a carbon handlebar, otherwise you risk crushing it.

Your handlebar is now installed. All that remains is to fit the other components (brake levers and MTB gear shifters) and then adjust your position. After your first ride, check the handlebar tightening.
