Cables in poor condition can quickly lead to malfunctions in the transmission or braking system. If you're a regular rider, it's advisable to change your cables and sheaths at least once a season. Here's a tutorial to help you do just that.
- Time : 30 min
- Level : Easy
- Tools : Allen wrench set | Phillips screwdriver | Cable cutter | Pliers
Steps
Whether Campagnolo or Shimano/Sram, the steps are virtually identical.
- Set the brake lever to the rest position.
- Release the brake cable with the Allen key, then remove the sheath.
Probikeshop tip: Locate the routing of cables and sheaths before removing them, so that you can reassemble the new elements in the same way.
- Remove the cable from the lever.
Probikeshop tip: Depending on the make and model of your levers, the cable is routed differently. Please refer to your levers' manuals.
- Cut the new cable sheath to size, using the old one as a template.
- Place the new cable in the lever.
- Thread the sheath over the cable while fitting it to the bike. Don't forget to thread the end caps.
Probikeshop tip: If the sheaths are not pre-lubricated, you can put a few drops of oil on the cables before inserting them into the sheath to reduce friction.
- Finally, place the cable on the brake with sufficient tension.
Once you've installed your new cable, all that's left to do is follow the brake adjustment tutorial.
