Even if adjusting the fork may seem complicated, it is possible to do it yourself. Here is some help.
To start, you need to set the SAG (English term for sag, SAG refers to the amount a suspension compresses when the rider is on the bike at a standstill, in the riding position.) or static sag. Adjust the air pressure in your suspension so that it compresses between 10 and 15% for Touring/Cross-Country or 20 to 30% for All-Mountain/Enduro. If you ride Freeride/DH, it is 30%. If you have a coil spring system, you will need to replace it with a suitable model to achieve a correct SAG setting.
-
If you are not using the full travel, there is a problem. Either the air pressure is too high (or the spring is too stiff) or the compression is too closed.
If the SAG setting was correctly done, first try opening the compression a little (unscrew) before moving to a higher SAG.
-
The suspension feels very soft throughout the travel and you frequently bottom out?
If the SAG setting was correctly done, first try closing the compression a little before moving to a lower SAG.
-
The suspension sags too quickly at the beginning but without bottoming out?
If you have a preload/threshold/beginning-of-stroke adjustment, close it. If not, you can add a little air.
-
The suspension is stiff at the beginning of the stroke, but you are still using the full travel?
If you have a preload/threshold/beginning-of-stroke adjustment, open it. If not, you can reduce the air pressure a little.
-
When riding on very rough terrain, the first few metres seem well handled by the suspension, but you then feel every bump. Grip is also generally poor?
Open the rebound a little.
-
Despite a SAG and rebound setting that seems good, the suspension remains stiff, especially when riding fast?
Open the compression a little.
-
Does the rear wheel seem to "skip" or make small bounces during braking?
Open the compression a little.
-
The suspension seems to return too quickly after an impact, as if it is bouncing, and grip is poor on rough terrain?
Close the rebound.
