When you become a passionate cyclist and need to carry out mechanical work on your bike, it becomes essential to equip yourself with a repair stand in order to facilitate complex operations. But what should be taken into account when purchasing a repair stand?
- The different stand types: double leg or tripod, foldable, wall-mounted, workbench-mounted
- The different attachment systems: by clamp, at the bottom bracket, bottom bracket + wheel axle
- Options and accessories: ergonomics, integrated scale, tool tray
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT REPAIR STANDS
The different stand types
There are different types of repair stand to meet the specific needs of each user, their constraints and preferences.
If you have space and want to work comfortably, a stand with a double leg or tripod is ideal.
If you are on the move or looking for a compact and easily transportable solution, we recommend a folding repair stand.
Finally, there are wall-mounted repair stands or workbench-mounted ones. This is the best way to integrate the stand into your workshop and minimise floor space.
The different bike attachment systems
The most common attachment is the clamp. Usually rotating up to 360° and offering a wide clamping range, it allows the stand to be adapted to all types of bikes and, above all, to attach the bike by different points (top tube, seat tube, seatpost…). This type of attachment can also be suitable for maintaining forks.
There are also attachment systems at the bottom bracket. Very stable, this type of attachment is not necessarily suitable for bikes with a large bottom bracket shell or for electric-assist bikes (e-bikes).
Finally, there are repair stands with bottom bracket + wheel axle attachment. These are often high-end repair stands used by mechanics of major road cycling teams (as they avoid the risks associated with clamping on high-end carbon frames). These stands can also be suitable for MTB use depending on the type of wheel axle and bottom bracket.
Ergonomics and accessories
In order to work in the best possible conditions, it is important to have several adjustment levels. Indeed, during your long hours of mechanical work you will appreciate having your bike set at the right height and having tools within reach. It is therefore useful, depending on your build, to check whether the stand is height-adjustable or not. It is sometimes possible to adjust the clamp rotation to ensure a good positioning.
Beyond these adjustments, accessories are available depending on the repair stand. You can find an integrated scale, a hook for handlebar support or a tray for holding tools. These accessories can save you time and energy when maintaining your bike.
In the interest of comfort, it is also important to pay particular attention to the stability of the stand. The more ground contact points there are, the greater the stability (especially for tasks requiring force). Professional repair stands are fitted with a cast iron base of over 40 kg, which provides very good stability while minimising floor space.
How to choose your repair stand?
Beyond considerations of size, ergonomics and comfort, the choice of your repair stand will be guided by the weight of your bike on the one hand, and the material of the frame and main components on the other.Bike weight
We advise you to pay attention to the maximum weight limit supported by the stand before purchasing, especially with a city bike, a DH/Freeride MTB or an electric bike, which regularly exceed 15, or even 20 kilograms in the latter case.
Carbon frame and components
We advise you to be careful when clamping carbon components with your repair stand's clamp. Carbon is a very rigid and strong material but it cannot withstand compression. In the event of damage, the warranty is no longer valid. Therefore, we recommend opting for a repair stand with a double bottom bracket + wheel axle attachment.
