How to regularly maintain and check your road bike?

Maintaining your bike is essential if you want to keep it in good condition for as long as possible, and also to detect any potential issue before discovering it out on a ride. Here is how to carry out a basic service, ideally once a month and after every ride in poor weather conditions.

  • Time: 45 min
  • Level: Easy
  • Tools: Cleaning brushes and sponges | Cleaning product | Lubricant | Tool kit

Steps

  1. Wash your bike with a jet of water and specific cleaning products to avoid damaging the seals or other sensitive components. Using brushes, work into all the nooks and crannies such as the bottom bracket, the cassette and the chain.
Probikeshop tip: avoid using a pressure washer as it can damage the seals, bearings and even the paint/stickers.

  2. Dry sensitive components such as bearings and the drivetrain with a cloth to prevent rust from setting in.
Probikeshop tip: take the opportunity to check the condition of the parts and the welds on your frame to detect any potential issue.

  3. Once dry, you can polish and protect the paintwork on your frame with a polish or wax and a clean cloth.

  4. Lubricate the drivetrain with specific oil.

  5. Now clean and lubricated, check the following points:
    • Tightening of your wheel axles, brake callipers and cockpit components.
    • Tightening of all the bolts on your bike.
    • Wear on your brake pads.
    • Wear on your drivetrain.
    • Play in the headset.
    • Play in the wheels.
    • Play in the bottom bracket.
