How to maintain and regularly check your road bike?

Maintaining your bike is essential if you want to keep it in good condition for as long as possible, but also to detect any problems before you discover them on a ride. Here's how to carry out basic maintenance, ideally once a month and after every ride in bad weather.

  • Weather : 45 min
  • Level : Easy
  • Tools : Cleaning brushes and sponges | Cleaning product | Lubricant | Tool kit

Steps

  1. Wash your bike with a jet of water and cleaning products products to avoid damaging seals or other sensitive parts. Use brushes to get into all the nooks and crannies, such as the bottom bracket, the cassette or the chain.
Probikeshop tip: avoid using a high-pressure cleaner, which can damage seals, bearings and even paint/stickers.

  2. Use a rag to dry sensitive parts such as bearings or drivetrains, to prevent rust from setting in.
Probikeshop tip: take the opportunity to check the appearance of parts and welds on your frame to detect any problems.

  3. Once dry, you can shine and protect your frame's paintwork with a polish and a clean cloth.

  4. Lubricate the transmission with specific oil.

  5. Now clean and lubricated, check the following points:
    • Tighten your wheel axles, brake calipers and cockpit components.
    • Tighten all screws on your bike.
    • Wear on your brake pads.
    • Wear on your transmission.
    • Steering play.
    • Play in the wheels.
