How to service a road bike bottom bracket?

In order to preserve the lifespan of your bottom bracket and maintain the best possible smoothness of rotation, it is important to service your bottom bracket regularly. With the newer generations of bottom bracket, this maintenance has become relatively straightforward.

  • Time: 1h00
  • Level: Easy
  • Tools: Allen key set | Cleaner/degreaser | Cloth | Grease

Steps

REMINDER: Depending on the crankset model, some steps may vary. It is important to consult the manufacturer's manual if you are in any doubt.

  1. Remove the first crank arm of the crankset. If it is a Hollowtech II type fitting, simply loosen the 2 Allen bolts on the left-hand crank arm, then fully unscrew the bolt at the end of the axle. If it is a GXP type fitting, simply unscrew the bolt at the end of the axle, which also acts as a crank arm extractor.
  2. Then remove the rest of the crankset
  3. Clean the bottom bracket shell and the crank axle using a degreaser
  4. Grease the now-clean bottom bracket shell and axle
  5. Reassemble everything as described in "How to fit a road bike bottom bracket"

All that remains is to fit your crankset.
