How to fit a road bike crankset?

Have you just received your new crankset? Here's everything you need to help you get started.

  • Time : 10 min
  • Level : Easy
  • Tools : Allen key set | Grease

Steps

REMINDER : Since Hollowtech II and GXP are the most common cranksets, we'll be looking at the assembly of these versions.

  1. Grease the crankset to facilitate assembly and protect against corrosion
  2. Thread the axle into the bottom bracket until it stops. In the case of a GXP, you may need to add washers before inserting the axle. Please refer to the manual.
  3. Fit the 2nd crank on the bottom bracket axle
  4. For a Hollowtech II type, adjust the play in the crankset using the nut at the end of the axle, then tighten the two BTR crank bolts to the specified torque. For a GXP, tighten the bolt at the end of the axle to the indicated torque.

Now that you've assembled your crankset, it's important to check the play and tightness after your first ride.
