How to service your bottom bracket?

How to service your bottom bracket?

In order to preserve the lifespan of your MTB bottom bracket and maintain the best possible smoothness of rotation, it is important to service it regularly. With the new generations of bottom bracket, this maintenance has become relatively straightforward — here is the proof.

  • Time: 1h00
  • Level: Easy
  • Tools: Allen key set | Cleaner/degreaser | Cloth | Grease

Steps

REMINDER: Depending on the crankset model, some steps may vary. It is important to consult the manufacturer's manual if you are in any doubt.

  1. a Remove the first crank arm from the crankset. If it is a Hollowtech II type installation, simply undo the 2 Allen bolts on the left crank arm, then fully unscrew the bolt at the end of the axle. If it is a GXP type installation, simply unscrew the bolt at the end of the axle, which also acts as a crank extractor.

  2. Then remove the rest of the crankset.

  3. b Clean the bottom bracket shell and the crankset axle using a degreaser.

  4. c Grease the now clean bottom bracket shell and axle.

  5. d Reassemble everything.

Your bottom bracket and crankset are now clean and greased. It is important to check the play and tightening after the first MTB ride.
