How to fit road bike tubular tyres?

Gluing a tubular tyre can be a tricky operation for a novice. Here is how to carry out the fitting properly.

  • Time: 3h00
  • Level: Intermediate
  • Tools: Solvent | Clean cloth | Tubular glue | Pump

Steps

Important! Before gluing your tubular tyre, you must place it on your wheel without glue, inflated to 8 or 9 bar, for at least 24 hours to allow it to stretch.

  1. Apply a thin layer of glue to the part to be glued on the tubular tyre inflated to 2 bar and on the rim, then leave everything to dry for 24 h.
Probikeshop tip: this step is essential to avoid tyre roll-off.

  2. Now apply a 2nd coat of glue to the tubular tyre and the rim evenly, then leave to rest for 10 min

  3. Start fitting the tubular tyre onto the rim beginning at the valve, making sure to centre it properly on the rim

  4. Finish fitting it onto the rim as you would with a tyre

  5. Go all the way around the wheel to re-centre the tubular tyre on the rim if necessary

  6. Inflate the tubular tyre to 4 bar then refine the centring

  7. Now apply a pressure of 9 bar then leave the glue to dry for 24 h before using your wheel.
Probikeshop tip: take the opportunity to clean any glue residue from the rim before it dries.
