How to fit a mountain bike chain?

A relatively straightforward operation, here is a video to help you replace your mountain bike chain yourself.

  • Time: 30 min
  • Level: Easy
  • Tools: Chain tool | Quick-link pliers (if the chain has one)

Steps

  1. Put the chain on the smallest sprocket and then disengage it from the crankset so that it is slack.

  2. Open the chain using the chain tool or the quick-link pliers depending on the chain you have. Then remove it from the bike.

  3. Use the old chain as a template to cut the new chain to the correct length. In the case of a new build, route the chain over the largest chainring and the largest sprocket without going through the derailleur, close the loop as short as possible and add 2 links (1 inner + 1 outer). Note that in the case of a full-suspension mountain bike, carry out this operation in the arm position that requires the most chain length.

  4. Refit the chain on your mountain bike drivetrain making sure to follow the correct routing through the derailleurs and so that the stamped side of the chain faces outward.

  5. For a SRAM chain, fit the quick link. For a SHIMANO-type chain, rivet the chain using the pin supplied with it, then break off the protruding part using pliers.
Probikeshop tip: if the riveting has created a stiff link, "massage" the chain to remove it.
