How to fit MTB brake pads?

If your mountain bike is fitted with V-brake rim brakes, here is how to replace them.

  • Time: 45 min
  • Level: Easy
  • Tools: Allen key set

Steps

Warning: V-brake pads have a fitting direction that is easily identifiable by the letter L for Left or R for Right indicated directly on them. If the letter is not visible, you can also determine it by the shape: the longer part of the pad must face towards the rear.

Probikeshop tip: you will notice that there are 2 sizes of concave washers. Depending on the width of your rim, you will need to place the thinner or thicker one against the pad to achieve the smallest possible gap between the rim and the pad.
  1. Fit the new pads by respecting the stacking order of the following parts starting from the rubber towards the nut:
one concave washer / one convex washer / the brake calliper / one convex washer / one concave washer / one flat washer / and finally the nut.
  2. Apply the brake lightly, then position the pad correctly so that it is well aligned with the rim and approximately 1 mm from the tyre.
  3. Hold the brake pad firmly in position, then tighten the pad bolt.

The pads are now installed. It is important to check the tightness after a few braking applications.
