How to choose your MTB chain?
Choosing the right MTB chain is fairly straightforward and will be guided by the number of speeds in your MTB drivetrain.
Standards
- Number of speeds: 9, 10, 11 or 12
TYPES OF CHAINS
Some chains offer a higher level of quality thanks to alloys or surface treatments that are more resistant to wear or corrosion.
To lighten your MTB drivetrain and thus limit its inertia, you can also find hollow-link chains offering a weight saving that can double depending on the model.
For fitting your chains, brands such as Sram, KMC or Yaban offer quick links that simplify the operation. Other brands such as Shimano are only designed for fitting by riveting with a specific pin.
WHICH CHAIN SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
The choice will depend on the number of speeds in your drivetrain and the performance you are looking for.
All the components of a drivetrain are designed to work under a specific speed standard, so you cannot pair a 9-speed chain with a 10-speed drivetrain, for example. Today most MTBs are 10 or 11-speed, but 9-speed can still be found, and occasionally even 8-speed.
- For occasional use, a basic chain with a quick link to simplify fitting will be more than sufficient.
- An amateur rider will prefer a chain with an alloy or surface treatment for maximum reliability.
- Finally, a competitor will opt for a treated and lightweight chain to optimise the efficiency and reliability of their drivetrain.
