How do I maintain my road bike bottom bracket?

To preserve the life of your bottom bracket and keep it running as smoothly as possible, it's important to maintain it regularly. With the new generations of bottom brackets, this maintenance has become relatively simple.

  • Time : 1h00
  • Level : Easy
  • Tools : Allen key set | Cleaner/degreaser | Cloth | Grease

Steps

REMINDER : According to the crankset modelsome steps may vary. If in doubt, consult the manufacturer's manual.

  1. Remove the first crank from the crankset. If it's a Hollowtech II assembly, simply loosen the 2 BTR screws on the left crank, then unscrew the screw at the end of the axle. If it's a GXP assembly, simply unscrew the screw at the end of the axle, which also acts as the crank extractor.
  2. Then remove the rest of the crankset
  3. Clean the housing and axle with a degreasing agent
  4. Grease the now-clean bottom bracket and axle
  5. Reassemble as in "How to assemble a road bike bottom bracket".

Now all you have to do is mount your crankset.
