How to fit a BSC-type MTB bottom bracket?

Here is a guide to help you fit a BSC threaded external bearing bottom bracket, one of the most common standards on MTBs.

  • Time: 30 min
  • Level: Intermediate
  • Tools: External bottom bracket tool | Wire brush | Grease

Steps

  1. Run a brush through the bottom bracket shell of your frame to remove any potential swarf or burrs from machining.

  2. Grease the threads of the MTB frame and those of the bottom bracket.

  3. Hand-thread the right-hand side of the bottom bracket anticlockwise. Finish tightening with the bottom bracket tool.
Probikeshop tip: as the thread is very fine, only use the bottom bracket tool once you are certain the bottom bracket is properly engaged.

  4. Then hand-thread the left-hand side of the bottom bracket clockwise, followed by the bottom bracket tool for the final tightening.

All that remains is to fit your crankset.
