How to adjust your MTB automatic pedals?
To avoid joint pain, it's important to adjust your cleats and pedals correctly. MTB automatic pedals.

Steps
Reminder: for the right-hand pedal ("R"), the screwing direction is conventional, i.e. clockwise; whereas for the left-hand pedal ("L"), it is reversed, i.e. anticlockwise.
The use of automatic pedals requires specific footwear, on which you will need to install mountain bike cleats which act as an interface between the shoe and the pedal. Here's how to set the cleats in your shoes mountain bike shoes :
- For longitudinal adjustment (front/rear), place your cleat so that it is centered on the axis formed by the fold between your foot and toes.
- If your cleat/shoe has lateral adjustment (left/right), position it so that it's centered on your foot.
- Grease and tighten to manufacturer's torque.
Probikeshop tip: generally not exceed 35 Nm, otherwise it will be difficult to disassemble them in the future.
Your shims are now mounted. After your first ride, it's a good idea to check the tightness.
This is a basic adjustment which does not take account of any pathological problems. It's important to test it on short outings to validate it or adjust it according to how you feel.
To fine-tune this setting :
If you move the wedges back, you'll feel less stress on your calves and be more comfortable going downhill. This setting may be useful for a beginner equipped with a leisure mountain bike or an All-Mountain bike with a full-suspension mountain bike.
If you move the cleats forward, it will be easier to push, but your calves will be put under more strain. This setting is recommended for competition-oriented riding, such as Cross-Country with a semi-rigid mountain bike.
If you experience joint pain due to the automatic pedals, it's best to consult a sports doctor or have a postural study carried out to identify whether a particular adjustment is necessary.
Some automatic pedals allow you to adjust the tension of the spring which determines the effort required to release the pedal. If you're a beginner, opt for a low tension to avoid falls while you get used to the system. Then, once you've got the hang of it, you can modify it to suit your riding style.
